Big Brave Dog and the English Project

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Big Brave Dog is working with the English Project to provide them an interactive platform where they can ‘promote awareness and understanding of the unfolding global story of the English language in all its varieties – past,  present and future’.

No small task I hear you say.

That said, the English Project, with its ambitious objectives, has already started to effect (or is it affect?) the Big Brave Dog crew and make us realise how fortunate we are to have such a wonderfully versatile language. One that, in essence, is a hybrid of Germanic, French, Anglo Saxon and many other influences cobbled together and branded ‘English’, then distributed to the rest of the world who make of it what they wish.

It’s interesting to note that historically, as a small island nation, we were subject to many an invasion, each one bringing with it new language influences (apparently except the Romans, whose influence wasn’t felt until long after they invaded. We were also told, by the head of English at Winchester, that France’s invasion in 1066 did away with genders in our language!). In turn, this small nation (possibly because it got fed up with being invaded) went forth and created one of the most influential cultures in modern history.

I’m glad we could give something back.

We look forward to the coming months. The English language certainly seems to be of far greater interest than we first realised.

Gremlins in the system

Gremlins, aah
Unfortunately, due to a technical error, the previous blog has been lost forever. Our apologies for this. Fortunately, most of the articles were stored elsewhere, so we should be able to get these back up onto the system soon. For anyone looking for a previous blog entry via history or bookmarks, please take a minute to look around as they may well be here, just not where you previousy found them.
